Carpenter Duties and
Responsibilities
- Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean environment. Observe
site specific regulations and wear hardhats and other prescribed protective uniforms.
- Report promptly any problem or obstacle in the construction progress to the foreman or supervisor for
early resolution.
- Study specifications in blueprints, sketches, or building plans to prepare project layout and determine
dimensions and materials required.
- Use Company provided hand tools and construction devices as prescribed and report immediately any
operational problem when using them.
- Assemble and fasten materials to make framework or props, using hand tools and wood screws, nails, dowel
pins, or glue.
- Install structures and fixtures, such as windows, frames, floorings, and trim, or hardware, using
carpenter's hand and power tools.
- Build or repair cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors, and other wooden fixtures used in buildings, using
woodworking machines, carpenter's hand tools, and power tools
- Inspect ceiling or floor tile, wall coverings, siding, glass, or woodwork to detect broken or damaged
structures.
- Cover subfloors with building paper to keep out moisture and lay hardwood, parquet, and wood-strip-block
floors by nailing floors to subfloor or cementing them to mastic or asphalt base.
- Fill cracks and other defects in plaster or plasterboard and sand patch, using patching plaster, trowel,
and sanding tool.
- Apply shock-absorbing, sound-deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
- Install prefabricated building parts in designated places in accordance with blueprint
design.
- Remove damaged or defective parts or sections of structures and repair or replace, using hand
tools.
- Finish surfaces of woodwork or wallboard in houses or buildings, using paint, hand tools, or
paneling.
- Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power
saws.
- Measure and mark cutting lines on materials, using a ruler, pencil, chalk, and marking
gauge.
- Verify trueness of structure, using plumb bob and level.
- Select and order lumber or other required materials.
- Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
- Maintain records, document actions, and present written progress reports, where
required.
Carpenter Skills and
Specification
- Good knowledge of science and drawings. Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in
the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as pole barns and pre-engineered buildings.
- Excellent medical and physical fitness
- Above average comprehension skills to follow safety regulations, instruction and in interpreting building
blueprints
- Above average verbal communication, social and interpersonal skills. The ability to understand and
communicate information is essential. The ability to read and/or understand written and/or verbal policy, instruction and directions.
- Side item: Must be able to work flexible hours as needed and be available for emergency
call-in.
Carpenter Education and
Qualifications
- A high school diploma is basic and most carpenters learn while on the job.
- 2-4 years on the job experience is preferred.
- A vocation certificate in carpentry from a community college is an advantage
